  • Through the years, "giftedness" has come to be recognized as a term that is not limited in application to the few or to children alone.
  • Giftedness has grown in being understood as an aspect of human beings from childhood, in adulthood and throughout life.
With these considerations, attention has expanded beyond the key roles of education programs to a broader focus which more widely identifies, encourages and supports gifted individuals in both childhood and adulthood.
For these reasons, WomenWorldCulture will work to stimulate discussion and research into definition of common and changing definitions of "giftedness," along with some broadly agreed upon signs of giftedness.
 
 
The idea of giftedness began when schools developed IQ tests to determine school placements. Since then, schools have seen Kindergarden to high school gifted students as a group with special needs to be met. By the 20th century, IQ tests were implemented as a tool to identify gifted children and efforts to accommodate the needs of these children were developed. This appears to have been most commonly practiced in public schools in English-speaking countries. Developing useful identification procedures for students who can benefit from more challenging school curricula is a continuing task in school administration wherever it is practiced.

Our efforts will include attention to several related topics: How common or how rare is giftedness? Is giftedness encouraged for some children and adults, while discouraged for others? Is recognition of giftedness impacted by social biases, based on race, gender, religions, gender orientation, disability, age or other factors. Can giftedness be enhanced or diminished? What should gifted people learn about giftedness for themselves?
 
The WomenWorldCulture List of Recommended Books includes a section related to giftedness (childhood and adulthood). Organizations, agencies, and associations which address giftedness are invited to give information that we can share with site visitors. We are interested in supporting positive, constructive research, study, programs, services and other work on this topic. We are also interested in learning about comparable work and activities around the world.
